FIFA World Club Cup 2023

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed plans for a new 32-team men's Club World Cup.

The current format sees seven teams vying for the title, with Chelsea becoming the current champions after beating Palmeiras of the United Arab Emirates in the postponed 2021 edition in February.

The 2022 World Cup will continue in its current format and will be held in Morocco from February 1-11, 2023, Infantino said at a news conference ahead of Sunday's World Cup final between Argentina and France.

But Infantino announced that from June 2025 there would be a wider competition, saying "it will go ahead and make it a World Cup".

The FIFA boss said the "best teams in the world" would be there, but added that details of the competition and the location of the first expansion had yet to be determined.

Fifa originally planned to launch the 24-team tournament in 2021 before the COVID-19 pandemic stymied the expected inaugural event in China, but now plans to hold a larger tournament every four years from 2025.

The international competition calendar will change from 2025, with an extended four-match break replacing two separate windows in September and October in late September and early October. The other windows - November, March and June - would remain unchanged, the governing body said.

FIFA also confirmed plans to launch a friendly competition called the FIFA World Series, which will be held in even-numbered years and will "increase the chances for teams from different confederations to play against each other".

In Morocco, European champions Real Madrid, South American champions Flamengo and Seattle Sounders will play, along with the first CONCACAF Champions League champions from the United States.
