Judge Ordered To Warner To Pay $79 Million

A government judge has ordered Jack Warner, a former FIFA vice president and president of North American football, to pay $79 million as damages.

Warner, who is fighting extradition to the United States, where he faces many corruption charges related to the FIFA scam, has announced he would vote in the August 10 general election.

The 77-year-old is a candidate for the Lopinot/Bon Air West seat in Parliament on behalf of the Independent Liberal Party (ILP).

Warner worked as the Chaguanas West MP from April 2012 until he resigned in April 2013, at which point he fought for reelection as an ILP candidate.

In a political career that has not been without controversy, he has previously held the positions of Minister of Works and Transport and Minister of National Security for the nation.

Warner was mentioned in the 2015 prosecution of many FIFA officials by the US Department of Justice, although he has tried to escape extradition to the US from Trinidad and Tobago to avoid prosecution.

He has watched as other people involved in the corruption scandal, which brought FIFA to its fall and resulted in the resignation of former President Sepp Blatter, have been arrested and convicted while he has been able to live freely in Trinidad and Tobago.

The extradition actions against the former president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football have been claimed to be illegal.

Warner, who pleaded innocent, is charged with 12 allegations of corruption, including conspiracy, corruption, and money laundering.

Although winning the General Election  wouldn't protect him from extradition, it might help him in his so far successful efforts to avoid being forced to stand prosecution in the US.
